Last Day in & on Lake Windermere

Following on from yesterday, we returned to the Museum.
Firstly to look at the Campbell display.
Malcolm Campbell's Bluebird.

A replica of Donald Campbell's K7 Bluebird.
The boat that he died in....

34 years after his death his remains
were buried at Coniston...

Alison wanted this one in...
It seems to me Mr Whoppit
wasn't lucky this time!!

From memory this was the model I had as a kid.

From there it was down to Lakeside
for the Boat trip to Ambleside.
We went down on the Swan.

Not quite my normal Figurehead shot...
It was probably a bit cold to get her gear off...

Storrs Hall is now a Hotel
It was owned from 1806-1837 by John Bolton
who was a Liverpool shipping merchant who made his money
dealing with the West Indian slave trade...
Apparently there are still chains in the basement
where they were kept.

There are magnificent old properties all along this section.

The Teal is the sister ship, we came back on her..
she was built in Burrow in Furness , shipped by rail
and assembled here in 1936.

This gorgeous old steam boat sailed past and gave me
a toot when he saw me taking his piccie.

Another home now a hotel...
The Boathouse bottom right is now the
Honeymoon suite...
Nice!

Lunch was at The Wateredge Inn.
Theakston Old Peculiar.

Alison had The Best Fish Pie ever.
 I have the recipe !!!
I told him we were Aussies, he said ok
because he likes Jimmy Barnes !!!

Said Hotel
Lunch was in the window left of the flag pole..

This flew for what seemed like miles beside us.

And so endeth a great day !!

Around Windermere

Well it's Motor Museum time
The Lakeland Motor Museum
was our first port of call.
A fabulous collection of motoring history.

 Donald Campbell's Bentley
repainted Bluebird Blue.

Double click to blow it up.

As a kid Donald Campbell was one of my heroes,
I was 14 and a bit when he died..
one of my favourite toys was my model of Bluebird.
Below is part of his boat he died in.

This tickled my fancy being a speed freak.
It would have been an awesome race car.
Double click if your interested.

Wild looking piece of kit.

A nice Citroen L 15

TVR's second car!!!
Pretty much a clubman.

Double click..

These are such cuties.

Then would you believe an 8 mile
Mini Cooper.
Awesome.

Now it would be a John Cooper Works!!!
I sold one of the new ones for $72k
would you believe.
Probably the dearest JCW sold in Australia at the time...
I bet this is worth a lot more.

A Police MGA,
they had to catch the villains!
Notice the siren.

Look at this then blow up and read the one below it !

Alison about to check out this Classic Van.

Leadlight Windows.

Gold fabric et al ...

Then down the back roads to Coniston
we saw what looked like Shark Fins topping the fence.
These aren't shaped to match like fins we saw earlier.

Below Donald Campbell's memorial..

Then his Headstone.
Complete with Bluebird.

Then this tickled my funny bone,
at the entrance to the Cemetery.

Now we had done two of my "things"
So it was Alison's turn.
This is Hilltop.
Beatrix Potter's home, just as she left it.
Guess what..No Photos
and a guard in every room...
Damn you National Trust!!!

Assume the pose !

Then this is the gate to McGregor's
Garden in Peter Rabbit , apparently !

From there down into Near Sawrey
part of the Village where she lived.

This tickled both our fancy,
check out the date.

Then to Wray Castle.
Hang on this is the Gate House...

This is the Castle...
once again Spectacular!!!

Tomorrow ???

Heading South...

After an early departure, with much sadness
we bid Alex, Kelly and Freya goodbye
and headed to Armadale to catch the ferry to Mallaig.
Hmm this doesn't bode well !

There's the trusty Passat waiting to depart at the front of the queue.
Quite amusing was the fact that as we travelled the
rocking of the ferry made all the car alarms go off!!!

And the snow from last night didn't look too flash either...

However we battled on to Glenfinnan.
We believe this is the bridge from
The Harry Potter movies....
from a different angle of course!

It is also the site of the monument, where Bonnie Prince Charlie
raised his standard in 1745, marking the start of his campaign
to restore The Stuarts to the throne of Scotland.

Along the road was this nice reflection in
Loch Eil.

We stopped at Fort William and the moss on this Church
gate took my eye.

The rain had started but we wanted to see what
remained of Fort William,
not a lot!!

Some nice Daffodils though!

Looking down the High Street.

We stopped at Onich for lunch,
Alison's was lovely and I sent mine back twice !!!
And then asked for my money back.
That's a first!!!
Onwards through the snow, 1.5 degrees coming
through the pass at Glen Coe Gorge and beyond.
We stopped at The Inn on Loch Lomond for the night.
This was a lovely property over the road.

This caught my eye on our walk before dinner.

As did this beautiful Cherry Blossom.

In the morning we headed south and went over the
Erskine Bridge to bypass Glasgow.

We headed into Carlisle for coffee then lunch
and to get info on Hadrian's Wall
This is the Town Centre,
I liked the strong shadow .

Looking down one of the side streets...
kinda nice.

Out past the old castle.

And on to the spectacular Augustinian Lanercost Priory.

On the way to...

This had always been on our "bucket list"
I don't think I would have made a very good Centurion....
as I'm apparently looking the wrong way !!!

This below is the Birdoswald Roman Fort
where you can see the longest continuous
stretch of Hadrian's Wall.

The outlined ruins of the fort are clearly visible.

From there south to Ullswater in the Lake District.

Then  up 1500 ft. to Kirkstone Pass.

One of our neighbours at home, had told us
about this place and it was a must do.
The above was looking down the other side.
Assume the pose Alison !!

Inside for a cuppa..

As we came out a Jet fighter screamed overhead
maybe 200 to 300 ft above us on his side...
Smart arse !!!!
But boy would it have been fun !
That's 3 times now.

Down the hill, but at least you can pass.

Then onwards through Ambleside on our way to
Windermere.
