Day 398 Larva Tubes
We pushed on with the Stalker's in tow.... to Mt Surprise, with the intent to go and view the Lava Tubes. There is a huge complex out there which we had been told was very tourist driven...we had also heard that the Bedrock Caraven Park had their own tour...a little more expensive but more hands on. It was sure that!!!! We started with a walk around the edge of a crater (first picture)..which fell in the Spewed catergory.
Then down into four different Lava Tubes. Alison had decided not to come as she wasn't feeling well, and I have to admit that some of the rocks and stairs were slightly challenging...but I made it with the help of Stephen and Graham. Back to the Lava Tubes...these were made by the flow of lava down the valley, the surface cooled and formed a crust and the hotter lava flowed on and out further down the valley, leaving these tubes hollow..over the years a few of the roofs have collapsed and thus allowing access to the inside of the tube.
The colours and effects that this process has had in places is quite remarkable, this shot was taken in complete darkness with the flash bringing the colours around us out to perfection!
One of the roofs looked like a church dome but you can see from the picture above that the roofs are quite smooth in comparison to the floor below. Some of the caves are now home to bats and numerous other critters...many snakes sit at the entry awaiting the bats to fly past...now that would be an awesome sight!!! Still it was another of our must do's that we can tick off the list!
