We left the Turtle at Weipa and travelled on up the Telegraph Road (for some of the way and then the Bypass Road), on our way to the Tip. We drove straight through to Bamaga, with a few issues on the way. The main one being that we lost all the bolts on the front guard cover of the air intake, which Stephen had to hold together with cable ties.....We searched out a good camping ground and without much mishap set up tent at Loyalty Beach. Not a bad place and some lovely company just beside us with Peter and Heather (plus daughter Fiona), and Bill and Beth. It had been a long haul but we were so determined to get to the Tip that the next day we got into town to get the car fixed...this was not going to happen till the afternoon so we decided to go anyway. The picture above is just before you do the downward slope to the Tip...or should I say the sign which says you are at the Tip. I know you have seen these before but we reckon that this is the furthest that we have been away from home....or as Joma said when we phoned to let them know that we had made it...she said "Which ever direction you go now you are coming home!".
The wind was blowing a gale and luckily someone came along who was gracious to take our photo evidence..the water was almost lapping our feet, the climb up and down was moderate to hard for me but it was all worth it in the end.....but I have to tell you of our photographer....
Not a bad pic with the little island in the background...see what I mean about the water at our feet!!!!!
Stephen and I were working our way down and met a few people coming the other way...then we realised that there was nobody out there to photograph us...before I could get to the bottom,Stephen spied this guy coming towards us in full leathers, carrying his helmet...it was Aaron the "Lone Postie"riding an old post bike with a big tank . This guy has been doing some different trips raising money for a childrens hospital. He offered to do the photos for us so we offered to take a photo for him...not necessary was the reply...been here before. Then he told us why he was back...he had a piece of his Mothers head stone and he wanted to have a few moments....so after the photos had been taken Stephen and I sat quietly while Aaron talked to his Mum and then threw the Head Stone piece into the sea...very moving....I must admit to a small tear running down my cheek..(she actually balled her eyes out. S.D.)
Then the climb back out, with a few more photo's on the way..this is the Bay on the West side of the Tip....which was a little more protected...and the Islands in the background include Thursday Island and Prince of Wales Island.
