We left Napier and headed for the north coast town of Gisborne. On the way we saw the incredible displays of engineering which included the Mohaka Viaduct. At 95 meters above the river it is the highest viaduct in Australasia.
A awesome sight...next time we would like to take the train so that we can see it from the other perspective.
We have seen many sculptures and monuments on our travels, but this one took Stephen's fancy. They are the three eras of archers. Very clever and very effective.
Now I had not realised the importance of this area. Gisborne has much to do with James Cook. Above is the observatory...... if you double click on any of these pictures you can have a read of some of the individual information.....saves me typing it all..........This the most easterly city in New Zealand...so the first place to see the sun on New Years Day!!!!
Now here was an interesting but stupid thing.....this plaque marks the spot of the tree planting...
Which is beside this statue of "Captain Cook". If you have double clicked the plaque in the above picture it is an interesting read. Just shows that the Kiwi's have a sense of humour...or stupidity. Now Stephen and I thought it looked more like Napoleon Bonaparte...with a touch of Lord Nelson!!!!!!
Cook's route of discovery...not bad for 1760's...
That's more like it ...at least the hat looks more the part.
Young Nick (Nicholas Young) the first crewman to sight New Zealand.
